Set right on the shore of Lake Laugarvatn on the Golden Circle, Fontana is a relaxed cluster of warm pools, hot pots and natural steam rooms built over a bubbling hot spring, with the cool lake a few steps away for a refreshing dip.
What to expect
Several pools and mineral rich hot pots at different temperatures, steam rooms that draw their heat straight from the spring below, and a lakeside deck. Many guests pair a soak with the chilly lake plunge for a natural hot and cold ritual. Fontana is also known for its geothermal rye bread, slow baked in the hot black sand by the shore.
Getting there
On the Golden Circle route between Thingvellir and Geysir, about an hour from Reykjavik, easy to fold into a day of sightseeing.
Best time to visit
Year round. Late afternoon is lovely, with the option to taste the warm rye bread fresh from the sand on a daily bakery walk.
