There are few finer ways to watch the northern lights than from warm water, shoulders under the surface while the sky shifts green above you. The winter soak is one of Iceland's signature experiences. Here is where to enjoy it and how to give yourself the best chance of the lights.
Why winter water is special
In the cold months the warm pools feel even more inviting, steam rising into the dark while you stay cosy below the surface. The long winter nights mean you can soak under a sky that is properly dark, and on a clear night with active conditions the aurora can appear right overhead.
The best lagoons for the lights
Open, low light settings give you the clearest view. Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon near the city are dramatic on a dark night. In the north, the calm Earth Lagoon (formerly Mývatn Nature Baths) sits under some of Iceland's darkest skies, and Forest Lagoon above Akureyri is sheltered and serene. In the quiet east, the floating pools of Vök Baths often give you the lagoon almost to yourself.
Giving yourself the best chance
- Choose darkness. The further you are from town lights, the better, the north and east excel here.
- Watch the forecast. Clear skies and active aurora conditions both matter, check before you go.
- Stay flexible. Give yourself several nights, the lights keep their own schedule.
- Let your eyes adjust. Look up often, faint aurora becomes vivid once your eyes settle into the dark.
Warm water below, a shifting green sky above, the winter soak is Iceland at its most magical.
